The Power Purchase Agreement contributes to establishing a new solar park near Vedde, in Sorø municipality.

HILLERØD, Denmark, February 29, 2024 – FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, a world-leading contract development and manufacturing organization for biologics, vaccines, advanced therapies and oncolytic viruses, has entered into a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)1 to offtake 40 GWh of renewable energy annually with Better Energy, an integrated renewable energy company in Northern Europe.

The PPA starts July 2025 and is expected to cover the total electricity consumption at the company’s Hillerød, Denmark biopharmaceutical manufacturing site, including new operations coming online in 2024.

Through the PPA, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies contributes to establishing a new solar park near Vedde in Sorø municipality, 80 kilometers from Hillerød. The solar park is expected to have an annual production capacity of 110 GWh, equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 68,000 Danes. In addition to offsetting the energy consumption of the Hillerød biopharmaceutical manufacturing site, the solar park will increase the amount of renewable energy in the Danish power grid.

Better Energy has worked closely with the local Sorø municipality and community members to develop a solar park that will include several nature and recreational initiatives, including 4 kilometers of trail systems and a pedestrian tunnel to connect the landscape to the village of Vedde.

“FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies is committed to doing our part to address climate change and support Fujifilm’s SVP 2030 initiatives,” said Lars Petersen, president and CEO, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies. “This agreement completes an important aspect of our climate strategy, Partners for the Planet,” continued Petersen, “When the Vedde solar park and the Blevins (Texas) Solar Project previously announced by FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation come online, all our seven manufacturing sites globally will be sourcing electricity generated by renewable energy,” concluded Petersen.

“We’ve formed a significant understanding with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies regarding their commitment to the green transition by powering their global manufacturing facility in Denmark with renewable energy,” said Mikkel Thorup, senior director of PPAs at Better Energy. “Not only have they contributed to a new large-scale solar park, but they are striving to reduce their environmental impact and move toward achieving their sustainability targets over the next decade.”

A step toward sustainability goals FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation set the goal of fully operating on carbon-free energy and achieve net zero CO2 emissions by FY2040. This PPA marks a significant step that FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies is taking toward achieving this and its other sustainability goals outlined in the initiative, Partners for the Planet, focusing on:

  • Zero impacts from operations – Pursuing zero environmental impacts in operations globally
  • Decarbonize the supply chain – Reducing GHG emissions across our supply chain
  • Valued Partner for Customers – Partnering with our customers to reduce environmental impacts and improve transparency.

“Offsetting our energy consumption with solar power at our Denmark site is a critical component of our Partners for the Planet strategy to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Christian Houborg, site head and SVP, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies. “This commitment demonstrates our dedication to be an environmentally responsible CDMO partner for our customers, and our employees can take pride in working for an organization that prioritizes sustainability, fostering a sense of purpose and motivation to fulfill our commitment to be Partners for Life,” concluded Houborg.

The financial terms of the agreement are not disclosed.

  • A Power Purchase Agreement is a long term contract between a electricity generator (the seller) and an electricity consumer (the buyer, normally a corporate or a utility) for the production and off take of electricity. The generator constructs, operates and maintains the physical energy asset and the customer consumes and pays for the electricity delivered. PPA’s are commonly used in relation to the construction of new renewable energy assets, which are often located outside the consumers premises and delivered via the public electricity grid.
