Associate Principal Scientist – Innovation

Essential Functions:

  • This is an entry level supervisory role which involves hiring and promotion recommendations, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, performance management and ensure that the goals of the group are met.
  • Responsible for administrative and supervisory duties for the group.
  • Plans innovation projects and collaborations in terms of timing and resources.
  • Independently applies scientific and/or cross-functional knowledge to achieve project goals.
  • Identifies and resolves technical project issues.
  • Implements strategic departmental research, collaborations and development goals or ideas.
  • Ensures technical quality of work for project execution.
  • Accountable for accomplishing project goals and objectives; anticipates and prioritizes workflow to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Monitors project plans and resources to ensure alignment with overall research goals and objectives.

  • Provide technical leadership for higher level analyses involving analytical or process experimental design.
  • Design, execution and interpretation of complex laboratory experiments with broad priorities set by supervisor.
  • May support Program Management and commercial teams with proposal/scope of work review, present on behalf of department at collaborator visits and provide laboratory tours.
  • Perform higher level analyses involving analytical or process experimental design.
  • Application of advanced scientific knowledge associated with larger and more complex experiments and projects.
  • Interpretation and judgment of the quality of experimental outcomes and data to effectively draw conclusions and make recommendations regarding project execution.
  • Defining and implementing strategies, initiatives, and actions to improve processes and procedures to ensure compliance with internal and industry standards.
  • May manage multiple programs.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • The Associate Principal Scientist group Leader has the following proficiencies:
    • Ability to complete technical assignments by designing, executing and interpreting complex experiments.
    • Provide technical leadership for higher level analyses involving analytical or process experimental design.
    • Initiate new experimental approaches and related work processes and procedures that align with company and regulatory requirements.
    • Partner across company functions and collaborate effectively with respect to identifying and addressing problems and opportunities that affect or require input from multiple units within the company.
    • Defining and implementing strategies, initiatives, and actions to improve processes and procedures to ensure compliance with internal and industry standards.
  • The Associate Principal Scientist Group Leader continues to develop the following proficiencies:
    • Provide technical/scientific leadership within the innovation department

    • Identification and resolution of complex technical project issues.
    • Creative application of scientific or process knowledge, instrumentation or data analysis to projects and issues.
    • Design of strategic innovation research and development goals and suggests new areas for research and collaborations.

  • The Associate Principal Scientist has the following problem solving skills:
    • Application of scientific knowledge to the design, conduct and implementation of studies and projects.

    • Possess a solid understanding of the research literature associated with advanced viral therapies; stay informed via journals, patents, meeting attendance and networking with internal and external experts.

    • As appropriate write, review and approve SOPs, analytical plans, protocols, summary reports.
    • As appropriate write, review and approve departmental and inter-departmental reports for internal and external distribution.
    • Serve as an organization spokesperson for technical issues for advanced viral therapy.
    • Direct communication with collaborators to communicate technical items and resolve issues.
    • Participation in scientific societies and meetings, presentations to student organizations on FDBT Science and Innovation projects and job opportunities.

  • Experience prolonged sitting, standing, some bending, stooping and stretching.
  • Ability to sit for long periods to work on a computer.

  • Use hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a manual pipets and other analytical equipment is required.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including safety glasses, lab coat, gloves, specialized clothing including laboratory scrubs (pants and shirt) and appropriate shoes required in most areas associated with this position.
  • May be required to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Attendance is mandatory.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. preferably in Virology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field and four (4) years relevant experience; OR
  • Master’s Degree preferably in Virology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field with eight (8) years relevant experience, and two (2) years in management/supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Virology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field and ten (10) years relevant experience, and two (2) years in management/supervisory experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
